29.

We crouch down against the bushes and Jordan peers over to assess the situation. It didn’t take as long to get to the facility as I might’ve imagined. Then again, I hadn’t imagined there to be a car. It was so unexpected that when Jordan arrived at the shack in this battered little thing Gash couldn’t stop himself from laughing. It was a contagious laugh and soon I was sniggering too,

“What’s with the car?”

“It’ll be quicker,” Jordan said. I’d never been in a car before, they’re rare even for Snoots. But apparently not for the children of the president. I climbed into the back, and it quickly became clear to me that despite what I thought, this wasn’t their own car. For starters, Jordan’s driving was terrible. Then there was the issue of what they did with it once we got to the facility. Jordan drove it straight into a ditch and we climbed out of the back door beside me and began walking towards the facility. There’s no way we’d be able to get it out of there again later.

The only thing I can say about the facility is it’s certainly not what I expected either. It’s mostly made up of reflective glass and is broad, though not tall, which gives me every reason to believe most of it is underground. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Definitely bad. It’ll be harder to get out if we’re having to race back up flights of stairs. Then there’s the fence. It’s not as sturdy or serious as the city wall but it’s enough to keep us out. We’ve got to be clever about how we get in and, for that matter, how we’ll get back out. The answer lies a few feet ahead of us: a truck.

A few men unload wooden crates from the truck and start taking them in through the open fence and into the facility.

“There’s no way we’ll be able to get in there unnoticed,” Jordan murmurs. He watches the scene thoughtfully and then nods. “Ok, here’s what we’re gonna do instead. When the next guy goes in with a crate, there’ll only be three crates left. I can distract the other guys whilst you get into one,” he nods at me.

“I’m not gonna hide in a crate.”

“Why not? Look, it’ll get you inside at least. Then you can use your telekinesis to get out of the crate and go deal with the security cameras. We’ll be waiting by the back entrance, and you can let us in once you’re done.”

The change of plan is too quick and sudden, and I find myself worrying it may not be such a good idea. But what other choice do we have?

We make our move towards the truck. Jordan goes ahead first, calling over the men and ranting on about a check he’s been told to do whilst his dad is gone. The men leave their posts and walk up to him, complaining that they’re doing their job as best they can.
